Pandora Garden Green Shed Design Competition Community Review

The Pandora Park Community Garden Society is hosting an open house to review the top entries in our GREEN SHED design competition. Join us to cast your vote for the best designs on Saturday, April 17th 2010 from 1-3 pm at Kiwassa Neighbourhood House, 2425 Oxford Street, Vancouver. Your votes and comments will be forwarded to the jury to inform their final decisions on April 18, 2010.

Community Garden Green Shed Design Competition

Pandora Park Community Garden Society invites student and professional architects, landscape architects, builders, engineers, gardeners and designers of all kinds to take part in Green Shed: Pandora Park Community Garden Design Competition. The goal of this international competition is to generate buildable designs for a storage shed and outdoor common space for a new community garden that will showcase sustainable building strategies and materials. The winning design will be built by a team of volunteers over the summer of 2010.

Plot Allocation

Spring 2011: We currently have a waiting list for plots. If you would like to get on the list, send an email with your contact information to pandoraparkcommunitygarden [at] gmail.com. Our list is in chronological order of when people contacted us.

November 2009:

We just had our meeting, where reasons for plot allocation were discussed.

The allocation committee did a great job and spent a lot of time trying to be fair for allocation.

I believe everyone on the waiting list who wanted a plot and showed up to a meeting or to help at least once will probably be allocated a plot in the garden.

To help facilitate this we have numbered the plots:

Please to help facilitate selection of plots, please send an email to Pandora Park Garden with the following information:

1. Your Full Name (or the name for who will have control of the plot)

2. The Size of plot requested (and reason if you care to detail ie: 4 members sharing; single person but I garden alot, etc)

3. Will you be doing gardening this winter (ie Nov-Jan)

4. Optional: Preferred plot number (this will probably not be used, but if you have a preference list it)

Plot number allocation will probably be randomly determined, once your plot size has been determined.

Please be aware that preference will be given to those at the top of the plot allocation list.

Any errors and omissions in this posting are due to the poster (jw) and the Garden Society cannot be held accountable.

Composter Design

We are moving on to a new stage soon, which is preparations for a new season of growing. In preparation for next year’s inaugural year, we are beginning plans for a composter in the garden. If you have any suggestions, ideas or designs, feel free to post links or anything in the comments section.

So far I like the idea of the 3-bin Stationary system detailed here:

As a side note, all of this construction would be better suited to a workshop or garage. If you happen to have a workshop or garage that you might want to loan or let us make use of please email or post a comment below.

Upcoming Meeting and Status update

The next meeting is scheduled for November 23rd, 6:30 pm, 2320 Franklin, just knock on the door if it isn’t open. We are in the room directly to the right of the doors.

We’ve had a few work parties, organized and impromptu. The fence is coming along well, and 2/3 done. Beds are also 2/3 done. I believe we may even have a few beds planted shortly.

Looks like we are going to try and have another work party this coming weekend: Sunday Nov 8th/2009.

Will try and update this blog with more information. Should be an email sent out shortly with details.

Tool request: If anyone has the following tools that they would be willing to loan for a short time until wee get the garden up and running, please let us know, you can email me directly at: gollumullog@yahoo.com

Clam Shovel / Post hole digger (still need to clena out the post holes a little)
Cordless Drill
Generator (1500W I think, enough to run a circular saw); even if we could just borrow it for a day, I would be responsible for it, and we can discuss of course.

Donations: Here is a list of things we could probably use at the garden:

gravel (pea sized gravel for drainage at the bottom of the post holes)
concrete (bags of concrete still useable)
decking screws (got any 2 1/2″ to 3 1/2″ screws lying around? donate them to the garden)
Cedar scrap ( anything we can use for stakes, 1×2″ – 12″ long minimum )
Tools ( do you have extra gardening tools? We can probably use them!! )

Workparty Saturday Oct 3rd/2009

We have scheduled a workparty for Saturday Oct 3rd. Workparty may also spill over into Sunday Oct 4th, depending on how far City workers progress this week.

Scenario 1) Saturday
If the city doesn’t finish with paths and topsoil, we are planning to get going on that ourselves: plotting out parts of the garden, spreading topsoil, carving out the paths and (possibly) laying granite. We will also need childcare and people to purchase and set up refreshments.

Scenario 2) Saturday and Sunday
If the city DOES finish their part, then we will be able to start on the fence: Our main teams will be: 1) augering 2) cementing and 3) leveling post holes in place. Also needed will be plotting and stringing the garden, carving out the small paths, laying granite, childcare and refreshments .

Please contact Carol to volunteer.

Work should begin around 9am.

Weather forcast looks like sun, so we should be able to get a fair amount of work done.
